Making the List

What a pleasant surprise when I discovered today that Bitter, Sweet made the Best Books for Kids and Teens 2011 list with the Canadian Children’s Book Centre. The titles in Best Books for Kids & Teens have been handpicked by expert committees of educators, booksellers, school and public librarians from across Canada. Can’t say how honoured I feel to have Bitter, Sweet included in this list. I’ll take a surprise like that any day.

  16. II know
I know just how you feel. I just found out I had won the Nobel in Literature instead of Herman Hesse and won a Pulitzer fro my letter to the editor to the Miami Herald back in February.

  17. Fantastic news, Laura, but I’m not surprised. Bitter, Sweet was an exceptional piece of work, a terrific read with characters that came alive – a very well crafted story. You done good, kid. Now don’t rest on your “Lauras” – get another one out there.

    • Thanks Dave. It did come a surprise to me since my book has been out for nearly two years. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I’m working on getting another one out there , but these things take time. :)

    What a big deal!!

    • Thanks, Jolene. It is nice to receive recognition for our work. Helps us feel as though we must be doing something worthwhile after all. :)

I’ve just met you (from Liza Kane to Kayla Olson to you), but I offer my congratulations, too. Bitter, Sweet. I love the title. It’s an eye catcher, with the comma between the two words. And it must be wonderful to have been so honored. It’s interesting that your book has been out that long. But I’m so pleased when I see that an excellent book gets the attention it deserves.

Actually, I clicked on your link on Kayla’s blog because your NAME caught my eye. You’re Laura BEST. I’m Ann BEST. And I’m so glad I met you.

    • Thanks for dropping in, Ann. It’s so nice to meet you. Actually we share more than a last name, my middle name is Ann.

Thanks so much for the congrats! It is greatly appreciated. :) This time last year my book was shortlisted for a national award which was really exciting. I wasn’t expecting to win but it was so nice to have the recognition especially this being my debut novel.

This list is nice because everyone on the list is a winner.

I hope you’ll stop in again..:)

  20. That is great Laura. Isn’t it a wonderful thing to find your book being acknowledged? I found that mine ( The Year Mrs. Montague Cried ) was seleceted for Woozles Battle of the Books list for 2012 and was thrilled. Once we get our work out there we have no idea where it will go. Congratulations!

    • Thanks Susan. It is nice to receive recognition for our work. I’m sure your book will make it onto the list for next year. I think the deadline for submissions is September and I’m positive Acorn will submit it for this as well as others awards. I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed for you…:)

I’m slow getting back here. LIFE has been hitting on me.

How ironic our names. Ann happens to be my middle name, too. My first is Rita. Mother called me Ann, but when I started kindergarten there was another Ann in class and I was called Rita through public school and then college. I was Rita when I met my first husband, and then became Ann. All my life I’ve hated the “double identity.” We did NOT give our 3 girls middle names!

That is indeed a great award for your book. To be in the company of winners is lovely. I do want to read your book. I’ve bought so many lately, my budget is shrinking, but I hope in a few months to get it.
