Oh Baby!! Do I have bragging rights?

Okay, so tell me she’s not the sweetest grandkid ever…

Now that I’m a grandmother, I’m told that, a certain level of obnoxiousness is acceptable. Although this isn’t going to turn into a “how much I love my granddaughter blog,” I have to at least do one blog post. Right?

The people who know me outside this blog know that this past week has been a very exciting time for me. Last Friday I became a grandmother for the first time and I’ve been fortunate enough to spend some time with my daughter, her husband, and new baby in Moncton. Being a country girl, this is the longest I’ve spent in any city. Oh the traffic! That’s certainly something you don’t hear so much of in good old E. Dalhousie.

So here I’ve been this past week doing what’s needed and offering support. (I can remember how unsure I felt about being a new mother the first time around.) But my daughter and her husband are both more than capable, and I have every confidence that they’ll get along fine. It’s been fun to be here this past week, to be able to help out but not take over—- if you know what I mean.

That’s my news this week. I have been working on a short story as well but somehow that news seems to pale alongside the BIG news.

Now to prove I’m not totally obnoxious and self-centred, I’ll give any of you a chance to talk about whatever you’re just itching to tell the rest of the world. Okay..ready..Here you go….

I remember when my mom became a gradma for the first time with the birth of my son, how much it affected her. It was a wonderful time for her (and still is).
And your granddaughter is the cutest thing ever, I could eat her up!
(ps. I’m 3 weeks away from my official due date. Your post makes ,me all that more excited.)

  4. Congratulations. I can’t top that. That’s the cutest newborn picture. She looks like she’s posing. Give us the stats. How much does she weight. From the picture, I’d say 15 pounds. 🙂

    • Stats you say: 8 lbs 1oz and 20 in. long My daughter says she came out with a backpack on and ready for school. (I’m sure it felt that way.) I’ve been having a great time this week enjoying every moment of it.

  5. Oh, Laura, she is adorable. You certainly have bragging rights! I’m glad you got to spend time with her. Nothing in my life tops a new grandchild.

P.S. If you’ve been wondering why I haven’t given you my thoughts on your book, it’s because I haven’t had a chance to start reading it yet. No pleasure reading for at least a week. Maybe this Sunday. *sigh*

    • Thanks Linda! With a four hr car trip between us I’ll learn to savour each precious moment as time goes by. Luckily, today it is so much easier to keep in touch and sent pics. etc.

It was in the back of my mine, whether or not you had read the book, I mean. If you really hated it I figured you’d have started out with a standard “Great cover!” 🙂

  7. Ooh, she’s beautiful! And as a fellow Grandma I grant you all the bragging rights you want. I read a bumper sticker once that said, “If I’d known grandchildren were so wonderful I would have had them first!”

The best news I can share today is that this evening I will be attending the wedding of a granddaughter! (Does that age me, or what?) Family time is precious. 🙂

    You do have bragging rights.

    As for me, let’s see…
~ I start a new (temp) job on Monday.
~ Summer registration opened for the martial arts business I co-own.
~ A director offered me a role in an intriguing short film that we’ll start working on in a month or so.
~ Post-production is coming to an end for a few other films I’ve worked on.

None of that is as exciting as a new grandbaby, I’m guessing. Congratulations!

  10. Congratualtions. Cute kid granny. Being a grandparent is pretty cool, sometimes expensive.

I actually posted the following on my Facebook after a conversation by phone with my granddaughter:

So this morning I asked my granddaughter Isabel what she wanted Poppy (me) to buy her for her birthday. She’s 4 going on 21 – Her answer: “I want a ‘humongous’ TV, a pair of high heels, a new bike & I wanna go to Disney.” …. Humongous? I asked if she knew what that word meant. “It means really really big – silly.” Sheesh!

    They grow up fast!

    • Not sure if I’m crazy about the word “granny” –makes me think about the Beverly Hill Billies–but oh well. I suspect being a grandmother is going to be a pretty cool thing.

Love the story about your granddaughter. That’s quite a list there for a four year old..At least she gave you lots to choose from, Poppy! 🙂

      • I don’t think she had choices in mind – note her use of the word AND. Belly (my nickname for her) has me wrapped for sure.

Deb goes by “Nanny” – “Granny” would get me an elbow to the ribs.

You’re right, Laura! She is a cutie! Enjoy! I have no experience to back this up but I suspect that grandchildren grow up even faster than our own children–probably because we see them less often. Don’t waste a precious second.

  13. Aww! Congratulations, Grandma 😀

I hope when my daughter grows up and has a family of her own I get to spend the first week of my grandchild’s life helping my daughter as you did. You can’t beat memories like that.

    Take care!
