I Got a New Attitude

Wow! Another lovely review of Bitter, Sweet over on The Brightest Blue if you want to pop over for a peek. Thanks Pauline. This was a totally delightful surprise!

With all the recent reviews I’m starting to feel as though my book as been born again. I didn’t expect this so late in the game.

Can’t say it enough, my blogging friends are simply super. Yes, that means all of you!

This winter I’ve had plenty of time to devote to writing. It’s been wonderful. A year ago, with the book newly out, I found it almost impossible to settle back into writing. I hated everything I wrote for a time. I simply couldn’t be objective. Worse than that I allowed myself to become distracted so easily. I was writing but was constantly searching for something new and fresh, leaving the casualties behind on my computer files.

But thank goodness for computers and those files that keep coming back to haunt us. Thank goodness for the knowledge I’ve gained that nothing we write is ever a waste of time.

It seemed as though I went though this period of writing to please others, something I’d never done in the past.

The wonderful thing about reflection is our ability to look back and review the past, see where we went right or wrong.
Reflection allows us to come up with these wonderful revelations and set ourselves back on the right track again.

What a difference a year can make.

And here’s the difference. I’ve gone back to writing the way I always have, write to put the story down, write the way I want to. This is what feels right for me. And you know what? Regardless of whether or not I ever have another book published I will be back to writing the stories the way I want to and that makes me happy. Have I adjusted my attitude? Of yah!

Have you had any change in attitude about something lately? This isn’t just a question for writers, but for anyone out there experiencing an attitude adjustment.

    • Glad to hear I’m not the only one Suzicate. The funny things about our attitude adjustments is the fact that many of them are over due. 😉

  2. Congratulations Laura on another great review of Bitter,Sweet. I bought a copy to take to my mother who is still in the hospital after breaking her hip 2 months ago. I know she will enjoy your book a lot.
I too have had a change in attitude. I have decided not to sweat the small stuff and just let life happen. I guess as we get older we realize we just can’t control everything in our life. It has made a big difference and I wish I had done it a long time ago.

    • Aww! That’s so sweet of you, Darlene. I know many of the older generation enjoyed the book because so many of them could relate to that time and place. Many of them were children during the 1940’s.

Give my best thoughts and wishes to your mom> I hope she’s soon home.

Aging really is a wonderful thing isn’t, Darlene. We definitely do change our thoughts and attitudes about life and realizing that so many things are not as important as we once thought them to be.

  3. You know the road to success. Why look for a different one? Sounds like a very good attitude adjustment.

I have my attitude adjusted often. I don’t know there’s anything wrong with it until it gets fixed. Then I say, thank you, Lord. I needed that. Blessings to you, Laura…

    • Thanks Carol Ann. Right now I’m just focusing on writing the way I have done in the past. When it’s time to change that for whatever reason hopefully I will be able to see that as well. 🙂

Sometimes those adjustments mean upsetting others because they like things the way they are.

    • You’re right, Mike. Sometimes people do become upset with us and the changes we make, but they need to keep in mind that we are all living our own lives and therefore these decisions are really up to us.

  5. I agree. We write better when we write for ourselves in our own style. It can’t be forced. Congratulations in finding yourself again.

I’ve a big note near where I work: Life is all about attitude. Change it and you change your views.

    • Thanks, Diane. So true that writing can’t be forced. The wonderful thing about change is that we have the ability to change whenever we want and as many times as we want. Nothing is ever set in stone.

  6. I’m so happy for you, Laura. I know what a surge of excitement means to your writing. I’m not quite there, though I have no complaints. I’m revising the sequel to Broken But Not Dead, but I seem to be stuck on the same chapter. I need to move forward, but for some reason, chapter 20 has me puzzled. Something’s not quite right. We’ve had a longer than usual winter, so you’d think I’d have chapter 20 fixed by now. Nope. Maybe it’s spring that I need! Yeah!

Good for you, Laura. I’m popping over to Pauline’s site now.

    • Thanks Joylene,

We’re usually able to see right away when something doesn’t feel right. Sometimes taking a break will bring us back to the story knowing immediately why it isn’t working.

I didn’t realize that there will be a sequel to “Broken But not Dead.” You must be very busy indeed these days!

  7. How great for you! I love rebirths – books, fashion, classic things becoming new and trendy again…like Streisand performing at the Grammy awards this year. I have attitude adjustments every day! I usually wake up cranky and then see life entirely differently by about 10AM. :-).

  8. I attended a women’s retreat a couple of weeks ago that gave me a new perspective on life. Now I’m making a real effort to let the past go and concentrate on the things I can do to make the future better for myself and my family. That includes setting aside more time to write since writing is one of the things I enjoy most.

    • Hi Carol. So nice to have you back for a visit. 🙂

Letting things in the past go is something that takes time and practice, but if we are willing to work at it it certainly can be done.. Setting aside more time for writing is something you’ll never regret. We all need “me” time.
