During the four hour drive to New Brunswick this weekend I took full advantage of the time Hubby spent driving to finish reading, “Revenge of the Lobster Lover” by Hilary McLeod. I don’t mind telling you I really enjoyed this book. It’s a mystery set in Prince Edward Island. Hilary’s books also include, “Mind Over Muscle,” and her next one due out is titled, “All is Clam.” Quite the witty titles, don’t you think?
Since I was nearing the end of Hilary’s book, I also brought along Sylvia Gunnery’s YA novel, “Emily for Real.” Sylvia’s a local author I met a few weeks back at a library reading. I’d been looking forward to reading it since picking it up. If you enjoy YA fiction, I’m sure you’ll enjoy this one. I certainly did.
While in New Brunswick, we were watching a few You Tube Videos from the New Ross area. Here’s one filmed at the Ross Farm, not far from where I live. It’s quite long (12 minutes) but I found it interesting. It’s about the use of herbs, a subject I’m interested in. Mona Reeves, featured in the video, is quite knowledgeable and grew up with some of this information around her. I’d gone to a talk a few years back that Mona gave and even ended up winning some basil plants as a door prize..If it’s a subject you’re interested in, I think you’ll find it worth your time.
What books have you read lately? Do you ever take along a book on a long drive to help pass the time?

/ July 1, 2012I have just read Greet The Dawn: The Lakota Way – by S. D. Nelson, which is a beautiful picture book. (I did a two-part review of it last week.) After that I read If I Have a Wicked Stepmother, Where’s My Prince? – by Melisssa Kantor. (reviewing soon)
My reading is quite diverse as I enjoy a variety of genres.
It’s fun keeping track, and helpful because sometimes I forget if I have already read a book or if it is still TBR. (isn’t that a terrible confession?)
I wish I could read while my husband drives but I get so sick .. just can’t do it and never could more than a few minutes. Having said that, I made a wonderful discovery while en route to Alberta by plane a few summers ago. I could read and not get ill, so I was immersed in Gone With The Wind almost the whole duration of our flights out and back. It was a great way to use up all those hours of sitting.

/ July 2, 2012It sounds as though you’re enjoying Goodreads, Lynn. I agree, it’s a great way to track the books we’ve read. I also enjoy a variety of genres. Being versatile is never a bad thing. 🙂

/ July 1, 2012I just finished reading Lake of Dreams by Kim Edwards which was very good. Before that I read Shadows in The Stone by Diane McCyver which I enjoyed a lot. Next on my list is an old Trixie Belden book, The Sasquatsh Mystery. You can see that my reading is very diverse as well. I can’t read while in a car but I can read on the bus and since I commute an hour each way, 5 days a week, I can now work through my TBR list. Like Lynn, I love to read while flying and always take 3-4 books with me. Of course now I take my e-reader to save space and weight.

/ July 2, 2012Oh my, I really enjoyed the video with Mona Reeves. Thank-you for that link… she is a darling. Now I feel like I want to go back to Ross Farm and wander around. (I didn’t know you could buy plants there.)
I recently read Late Nights on Air by Elizabeth Hay, and I loved it. It takes place in the Canadian North (Yellowknife area) and circles the lives of folks who work at a radio station. It was one of those books that stayed with me long after I finished it.
I used to commute to Halifax each morning… and since I was driving, I listened to books on DVD. I went through a huge list of books over 4 years, but for me it just wasn’t the same. I have to curl up in a chair and see the pages, speed up, slow down, reread a passage… all that stuff! I think I will have to track down those books and read them properly when I have time. Ha!

/ July 2, 2012Yipes! I’m embarrassed that you found it. It’s a ‘non-blog.’ I tried to figure out how to navigate the site but was not successful. I gave up on it… but maybe one of these days when I have a lot of time….? (You bloggers impress me!)

WordPress is pretty user friendly, although they keep changing things around. A lot of good blog die a slow death, I hope that won’t happen to yours. It’s a great way to connect with others. If you can ride a motorcycle, I have every confidence that you can master wordpress. 🙂

/ July 3, 2012Mona is wonderful. I loved the video. Thanks, Laura. I want to live that quiet life, and I will. For the first 12 years we lived out here on the lake, my next door neighbour ws Ida Cutler, from the UK. She would say the same thing, that she knew little of gardening. Everyone in the community went to Ida if they had a problem with anything gardening, canning, etc. Ida was also a poet. I miss her. She looked like Katherine Hepburn, sounded like her too, only had 30 lbs on her.
