There is a privacy about it which no other season gives you…. In spring, summer and fall people sort of have an open season on each other; only in the winter, in the country, can you have longer, quiet stretches when you can savor belonging to yourself. ~Ruth Stout
Here are a few snowy photos taken at Black Duck Lake yesterday after Saturday night’s snowstorm.
Before this happened there was scarcely a scab of snow to be found. It looked more like spring in these parts than winter. Not only that, the temperature was on the plus side all week long. Nice, since we’d just come through a cold snap.
But, Mother Nature decided to remind us that winter is far from being over. Although spring was flirting with us, she certainly isn’t ready to stay anytime soon.
I’ve been busy writing this winter, as you would expect. The cold weather makes me want to stay close to home and put a pot of soup on the stove to scorch simmer. I also have some reading to catch up on– along with all the usual boring things like housework– as I wait from spring to arrive again.
What are you doing this winter? Are you enjoying the beautiful scenery or are you hoping for an early spring?

/ January 20, 2014Although I dislike winter and cold, I do love seeing the trees laden down with fresh snow like this. Always feels like a bit of an alternate universe to me. Keep that soup warm and keep writing! It will be spring before you know it.

/ January 20, 2014Yesterday’s snowfall was beautiful. I was out too snapping pictures. It was like a winter wonderland.
I wish I could stay in by a fire and write all winter, but…I’ve young ones in the house which means routine all winter. I am writing more, baking more and reading.
Thanks for sharing the lovely photos.

/ January 22, 2014The blizzard is building. There’s a lot of snow down and still falling and the wind is picking up. I need only go out once more to feed and water the animals and make sure everything is secure. Then it’s back to the warm house. How’s the weather on your end of the province?

/ January 22, 2014Oh my, the snow plough just went! That’s twice today. Quite a bit of snow is down. I was out and shoveled off the doorsteps earlier, why? I have no idea. The wind is picking up as well and the upstairs is creaking. I just hope we keep our power. It was off 14 hours on Sunday, which wasn’t bad considering it was the first time all winter we’d lost it.

/ January 20, 2014Beautiful photos, thanks Dianne. i put the bottom one on my desktop. I can see tons of snow outside my window, but ours is polluted by gravel and sand, which we would grouse about if they didn’t spread it so liberally.Your snow is pristine. I suspect most Canadians have a love/hate relationship with snow. Thanks again. I miss the Maritimes!!!

/ January 20, 2014Another winter storm warning for Wednesday, so yes, I guess that Mother Nature is still throwing her winter weight around…I like to think of her as a menopausal woman–freezing cold one minute and heating up to her very core the next. So goes winter in our Maritimes! Glad to hear that you’re using your seclusion time to write and scorch soup…

/ January 21, 2014Although I moved to the west coast to get away from the snow, the pictures are lovely. I suppose if one could stay in and write and read, it would be OK. But when you have to go out to work in it, it is no longer so attractive. Enjoy your writing time. I look forward to the next book!

/ January 21, 2014Glad to know you are writing during this (already) long winter. I teach a day and a half every week, and on the other days I’m editing and working on a freelance contract that ends Jan. 31–oh yes, and marking and housework, etc. It’s nice to have a routine that allows time for just thinking, unlike my fall semester which was absolutely frantic. Great photos.

/ January 23, 2014We had pea soup for lunch today, but not because of the weather. Out here on the west coast it’s mostly sunny and mild this week… not wintry at all. I love your photos! The stillness that settles over everything is beautiful. A fresh snowfall muffles the world’s distractions… always a good thing when you’re writing. 🙂

/ January 23, 2014We had a blizzard yesterday, Carol, with lots of snow for shoveling. I just came inside a bit ago as a matter of fact and will be going out again the afternoon. I’m trying not to grumble, at least we didn’t lose power. There’s always a bright side if you look for it. Glad you’re having nice weather. You can send it our way anytime. 😉
