Twelve Lessons From 2015

For my first post in the New Year I thought I’d share with you some of the things I learned in the past year.

I firmly believe that life is all about the lessons. (I’ve said that before on my blog.) Some of them come easy, some not so easy, but like it or not, they still come. And thank goodness they do. 2015 wasn’t what I’d call a spectacular year, but there were some very precious moments sprinkled along the way. Lessons were learned (or sometimes came a second or third round as lessons often tend to do.) All we can do is deal with what’s presented to us and be thankful that we have a lifetime to try and figure it all out.

So here are twelve of the lessons that came my way last year. One for each month. Hopefully, there is something here that you can identify with.

1. The story isn’t finished simply because you think it is. Last year I finished the same novel about three times. This year, I hope to finish it only once. *Note I said hope.

2. Insensitive people don’t intentionally do hurtful things. In fact, they usually don’t take the feelings of others into consideration at all. What’s more, that’s unlikely to change anytime soon. Either accept them for who they are or give up being their friend. They probably won’t notice either way.

3. The only thing better than the birth of a new grandchild is the birth of two. I mean, why settle for one when you can have two I always say?

4. Not everyone will appreciate the things you do for them—true story. I’m not complaining, just stating facts. If you can’t do something for others simply out of the goodness of your heart don’t bother. Expecting praise for the things you do only puts a price tag on your good deed. Try doing something anonymously for a change. That’s when you truly know you’re not just looking for praise for those kind deeds of yours.

5. A good book will teach you a lot about the person you are. If you don’t think that’s true, join a book club, open yourself up to discussing topics you’ve never discussed before. Find out what your thoughts are on various issues, how they make you feel, what your thoughts and ideas say about you as a person. You might be surprised or even amazed!

6. Some people you just won’t like in life and they won’t like you. Believe me, it’s not the end of the world. For years, I was unwilling to admit when I didn’t like someone. These days I’m more honest with myself. We can’t possibly like everyone we meet. But so what? There are plenty of people out there to like, people who bring a smile to your face or a warm feeling in your heart. Cherish them.

7. You can’t be everything to everyone. Seriously, take care of yourself. Fill your own cup first. Fill the cup for others with what’s left over. That’s not being selfish it’s being realistic. There’s only so much one person can do and do well.

8. Even a new computer won’t make dial-up any faster. Rural Nova Scotia—what more can I say?

9. The email comes when you least expect it. Funny how we can spend time waiting on things, hoping for things, and then right after we give up on it, poof , something totally unexpected arrives, maybe even better than what we’d hoped and planned for. I had a few wonderful surprises this year that totally came out of left field. (In fact, as I write this, I just received one such email…Blows my mind…go figure!)

10. We are given just so many days in this life. Use them wisely. 2015 saw the loss of some people in my life who were far too young to leave us, but instead of spending our days mourning their loss we should honour their lives with the happy memories we shared with them. Sometimes this is easier said than done.

11. There are far too many books on the planet and you can only read so many. Sad but true. Each year my TBR pile seems to grow. Too many good books, people. Too many good books!

12. Sometimes you just need to let go. That’s a difficult one. Letting go of the things we have no control over takes some doing, especially when we allow that “thing” the power to tie us in knots. Letting go gives us freedom and peace, but it often takes time for us to come to that place.

So there you have it; some of the lessons I learned in 2015. Of course there were many more than the twelve I’ve listed and no doubt many more that I failed to recognize as being lessons at the time.

I hope 2016 is a memorable year for you, a time for you to grow and learn and come to appreciate the lessons that come your way.

Did you learn any great lesson in 2015 that you’d like to share?

I’ve learned that because you were friends with someone since high school, doesn’t mean that you have to be friends with them now. People and priorities change, sometimes for the better. Also, maybe publish your novel with all the different endings. 🙂

    • Agreed. Friendships come and go, sometimes we look around and realize that we’re simply friends with someone out of habit. The very things we had in common, that brought us together in the beginning, no longer exists. You make an excellent point, Storm..

LOL! Three different endings might be interesting, kind of like those “choose your own adventure” books. I wodner if my publisher would go for that. 😉

  2. A great list. Number 6 & 7 took me a long time to learn. Isn´t it great that their is always something to learn no matter how old we get. I learned a lot last year. One is that no matter how much things change, some things always stay the same! Have a fabulous 2016 my friend!!

    • Yeah, 6 & 7 tough ones for those of us who grew up in that *other* time.

Yes, some things do remain, steadfast and reliant. Good things for that, too. Wishing you a wonderful 2016 with much success and happiness.

I joined a book club a few months ago. I’ve found it to be most interesting and informative. I’m also being led to read books I otherwise wouldn’t have come across…this has both good and bad points, ha!
There are so many books and too little time!
    Happy 2016!

“Lessons are presented until lessons are learned”…..can’t take credit for that quote but I’ve never forgotten. 2015 was so full of lessons, trials and wonderful events. Too many to count. Happy New Year, Laura!

  8. Strange, I couldn’t leave a comment when you first posted this. It kept asking for my wordpress password. I’m actually switching to WordPress soon. Anyway, I digress. I wanted to thank you for this list. You’ve reminded me just how close-knit our community is. This list will make my writing life easier. Haha, remember dial-up!? Yes, great reminders.

  9. these are great, some I have known for a while. as for lessons, I don’t have any to share. I kind of learn things as I proceed and then I kind of forget about them but reading other people’s is a good reminder, so thanks.

    have a wonderful day.

  10. Last year, I learned there are some people I can’t possibly like either. I’ve tried, but some people continue to do things that make them unlikable people. I don’t hate anyone; that takes a lot of emotion, but I’ve come to disliking some people. I’ve dismissed them from my life to remove the negative energy they bring into my life.

I learned several years ago that I’m number one. So many times I hear that your children, your family or your animals come first. But if I don’t take care of myself, how am I to take care of everything else. They get better service when I’m healthy and happy.

I learned in 2015 that I can’t keep things together that are meant to fall apart. I have to let it go. I just have to keep in mind that change is good. Change reminds us we are alive.

This is a great list of learning. When we stop learning, we stop living.

    • Yes, life is all about learning and there are lessons to be learned and relearned as we go. Some lessons, I expect, will take a life time of learning as we aren’t always willing to let go of old thought processes and habits. All the best to you in 2016, Diane. I hope the coming year brings you much success and happiness!

  12. Yeah, 2015 was the year the universe decided to test me on all fronts 🙂 Especially my (thought to be non-existent) fear of failure. HA! Health issues with their financial consequences equaled a major setback, or an opportunity as I’ve told myself.

My biggest lesson? Only once you admit defeat (or failure, if you will), can you LET GO, get back up and go at it again. At Thanksgiving this year, when my turn came, I shared that I am most thankful for second chances. No matter how bad things get, if you’re still alive, you have another chance to do things differently, to make better choices the next time.

Laura, if I was still on dial-up, I’d break up with the Internet. LOL You most certainly have great patience to go online with that connection speed. I would love to be that patient. 😉

    • I hope your health issues have been resolved, Leah. and sometimes it’s difficult to see the “opportunities” that life sends our way. I suspect that has something to do with the fact that we don’t yet know the outcome. I think that’s what having faith is, knowing that whatever comes our way serves some purpose. Attitude plays such an important role. But having a great attitude doesn’t necessarily mean we won’t have times of doubt. Strong people are not strong 100% of the time. I’m pretty sure about that! and it’s okay not to be. That’s the good thing.

Ha! Not sure how great my patience is for the Internet, Leah. I do hope that one day high speed will be offered to everyone in rural NS.

Hang in there. I know you will. 😉
